Jordan: Amman

This December we had the exciting opportunity to travel to Jordan for a long weekend with a group of our ASD friends. After school we made a mad dash to the airport, as our flight left less than 2 hours after school got out. Luckily the traffic was light (a rarity in Dubai, especially on a Thursday!) and we had no problems checking in at the airport. When we arrived in Jordan we were met with our guide, Jihad- no joke! He was a very kind man, and did a wonderful job guiding us through Jordan. Our first night we stayed in Amman, a rustic city tucked in amongst rolling hills. The next morning we wandered around the Roman ruins downtown before taking off for Petra.

Computer Whiz!

I can't believe it, but I had a brief technological breakthrough this afternoon and experienced a momentary sense of pride that computer whizzes are lucky enough to feel daily!
Well, folks, your eyes will thank me, 'cause there will be no more squinting to see the details in our blog photos! After weeks of tinkering and some tips from a fellow blogger (thanks!) I have finally figured out how to post larger pictures on our blog. I even had to rewrite part of the HTML template, so I'm feeling pretty darn smart=). I've gone through my posts from 2008 and adjusted all of the photos to the "new size" so feel free to peruse them at your leisure. I have been waiting to post my Jordan pictures until I had this issue all worked out, so I'll get them up soon.

Liquid Sunshine?

As I prepared to leave school today it took me a good 2 minutes to figure out how to turn on our car's windshield wipers. Why, you might ask, would you need to use your windshield wipers? Don't you live in the Middle East?? You know, the dry and arid desert??? I was pondering precisely the same thing as I fumbled with switches and levers surrounding my steering wheel. However, for the last 5 days Dubai has experienced steady rains, culminating in today's massive downpour. Ick! The sky is dull and gray, and I can't help but think we brought a little of the Pacific Northwest back with us after Christmas.
We found quite a surprise as we left for work this morning- the whole underground parking lot of our building was under several inches of water. What an interesting start to our day!
As we made our way along the flooded roads to school, the insanity levels of fellow drivers must have peaked (I honestly didn't think these people could be any crazier on the road). If we weren't sure before, we are certain now that Dubai is the Land of the Honking Horn! Beep! Beep! Beeeeeep!!! Sheesh! People are glued to those noise makers! Vehicles were stalling all along the freeway in areas of deep water, and within moments cars were backed up and frustrated drivers were laying on their horns. As if that is going to start the car again?! It took us an hour and twenty minutes to get to school- about three times the normal commute. Though we arrived late, a security guard opened the gates for us and we were shocked to find a shallow swimming pool where the staff parking lot once existed. Luckily having a big car payed off and we maneuvered through the water to a parking spot on higher ground.
The kids were absolutely wired today because of the rain and the playground was so waterlogged that all recesses were held in the classrooms, which meant no breaks... eek!
Before heading home we were advised to avoid Sheik Zayed, our biggest highway, as it was littered with abandoned, semi-submerged vehicles. The likelihood of making it home was slim when using that route, so I opted for Al Wasl and Beach roads, both of which had their fair share of standing water. There were times when the wakes produced by passing vehicles washed over the top of our SUV. Another week of this rain (and lack of drainage) and I fear we will become the next Atlantis! Flooding is occurring everywhere! Good thing we brought our snorkels=).
The silver lining of all this liquid sunshine is that we have tomorrow off of school! Woo hoo! Two days off in one week=). The first was thanks to a visit from G Dubbya. The government heightened security big time, closing off 3 of the main roads running through the emirate and declaring the day a national holiday so folks would stay home. So, we are looking forward to lounging in our jammies and staying dry.

It's a good day to be a Bella!

The weather was nice and cool today, so we decided to check out a new stretch of beach near our house. So far, it is our best beach find! Bella had lots of room to run and chase her ball... needless to say, she was in heaven!

Is it possible to measure the grandness of a day by the length of a panting dog's tongue? I think so... it was a good beach day for Bella!

They're Engaged!!!

Hooray!!!

Bitter wind and steady streams of rain couldn't put a damper on December 22nd! It was on this soggy and wonderful day that Isaac and I ventured out in the muckiness to help Chad with his adorable proposal to Toni.
Chad and I had been planning the details of this exciting event for 2 months via instant messanger, and I had volunteered Isaac’s fine sand-writing skills for the occasion. He was to scribe the all-important question in the sand of Newport’s historic Nye Beach, a favorite spot of Chad and Toni’s. As self-appointed supervisor of the sand-writing, I stood on the sidewalk overlooking the site, and attempted to relay directions to Isaac over the roar of the crashing waves. Even though it was freezing cold and the rain was blowing sideways, my sweet husband tolerated my superfluous suggestions, and patiently altered the shape of the heart and the size of the lettering. After 8 consecutive months of summer weather, we were nowhere near acclimated to blustery cold temperatures of Oregon, so we were chilled to the bone by the time we made it back to the car (which also acted as our secret hiding space for the proposal). Before the trip home we purchased a new telephoto lens for our camera, and my official job of the day was to document the proposal without Toni seeing me.
Just as we got situated, a large gold truck pulled into the viewpoint in front of the proposal site. Several minutes later the truck doors opened, and an extremely uncoordinated woman lumbered out of the vehicle and made her way to a bench along the viewpoint. Of course, at that moment, Toni and Chad arrived. Yikes! What in the world was this woman doing?! She clamored onto a bench and was pretending to be blown away, as someone in the truck snapped pictures of her. You’ve got to be kidding!!! Isaac and I were beginning to panic… Chad and Toni were on the other side of the viewpoint and I could see Chad watching the woman and doing his best to keep Toni distracted by pointing out a couple of wind-blown seagulls on the beach. The woman then began her clumsy return to the truck, but could not manage the coordination necessary to step down off the curb. At this point Isaac and I began yelling and laughing. AHHH!!! Don’t worry, the woman couldn’t hear us, but we could not believe the ridiculous spectacle before us. She finally reached the car, and with assistance from a fellow passenger, was hauled into the truck. It was another tense minute before they finally left. Whew! Chad began to lead Toni around viewpoint, and she caught sight of the writing, just as planned. Once Chad confirmed the message was for her, Toni became a mad kissing machine, covering her soon-to-be fiancĂ© with smooches. It was too cute! I was snapping pictures like mad. Between the wind knocking the camera around and my own nervous shaking, I prayed that we would have some sharp photos. We stuck around long enough for Chad to give us a little wave (we responded with enthusiastic thumbs up), and then we took off to secure a table at the Rogue River brewery along the bay.
When Toni and Chad arrived, there was a whirlwind of squealing, jumping, hugging, and crying… the boys just sat and stared at us in amazement=). I know- we girls are a piece of work! We celebrated with snickers (a delicious Rogue concoction) and a scrumptious lunch. We spent some time at Chad’s family’s cozy home before making the long drive to Portland.
It was such a fantastic day, and we feel so blessed to have been part of such a monumental occasion. Congratulations Toni and Chad! We love you so much and wish you a lifetime of happiness together!!!
