Ah yes, life is never dull in Dubai. We didn't hear the "earth-shaking" kaboom as we drove to work this morning, but we definitely saw the black billows of smoke that poured from the fire. We've heard numerous stories about what happened, but the most consistent version was that a toy warehouse was filled with illegal firecrackers, and somehow caught fire (perhaps the lack of structure and safety codes???). The blast and succeeding fire were so great, that at least 3 other nearby warehouses were destroyed. We know of 2 deaths and 3 injuries, but fear the number will be much higher by the time the area settles down. The school was already buzzing like crazy when we arrived. Within an hour the sky over Jumeirah was deep gray, and ash was floating down onto our campus (the fire was miles away!). For safety precautions, the kids were not allowed outside for recess, and boy, were they wired by the end of the day! By early afternoon the sky returned to a brilliant shade of blue, and Isaac even participated in a staff versus JV softball scrimmage. A large plume of smoke still loomed in the sky as we drove home, but it was far less threatening than this morning. Please say a prayer for those anyone who might be affected negatively by this event.
